Carolina Challenge

The Carolina Challenge is a three-week program which serves as a capstone experience for
campers enrolled in Wellspring Camps, and also as an orientation for students entering Wellspring Academy of the Carolinas, formerly Academy of the Sierras North Carolina, for the fall semester.

Starting the Sunday after camp ends and continuing until Saturday August 30 – the day before the start of the fall semester at WSCL – the Carolina Challenge is a fun and adventurous three-week weight-loss program. Students are provided with innumerable invigorating opportunities to stretch themselves physically and mentally. Activities include whitewater rafting, rock climbing, backpacking, kayaking, beachcombing, hiking in natural areas such as the Outer Banks and Cape Hatteras, and a stimulating educational expedition through the museums, monuments and malls of our nation’s capital, Washington D.C.

As at Wellspring Adventure Camp, students will be backpacking and camping through North
Carolina, on up to Washington.

For Wellspring Campers, the Carolina Challenge provides an additional three weeks of the
Wellspring weight management and behavioral change programs in exciting new places.

With the level of activity we expect on the Carolina Challenge, weekly weight loss should be
comparable to or exceed what was achieved at Wellspring.

For students entering WSCL, the Carolina Challenge is an opportunity to bond with fellow
students, to acclimate to the WSCL program and to jump-start weight loss.

Behavioral coaches accompany students on the Carolina Challenge. Students are promoted in the Compass System throughout the expedition. Meanwhile, training on weight-controlling
behaviors and cognitive-behavioral therapy continues every day.

Most of all, the Carolina Challenge provides students with many positive, energizing and
memorable experiences.
