Wellspring understands that weight control can be a complicated struggle and that overweight people are up against many discouraging factors. Unlike traditional weight loss camps, Wellspring Adventure Camp does not end on the day campers return home, instead Wellspring Adventure Camp campers are provided the tools necessary for long-term success. The Wellspring Plan is based on decades of scientific research, which states that the only way to become a successful long term weight controller is to modify behavior and renovate lifestyle. Knowledge, awareness, and a new set of trained behaviors will result in long-term success.
Behavioral Change—The Wellspring Clinical Program>> Wellspring Adventure Camp campers are trained on a set of behaviors that have been proven necessary and sufficient for successful long-term weight control. These behaviors include such core self-regulatory behaviors as self-monitoring, journaling, goal-setting, and contracting. In time, these weight-controlling behaviors become habits, and when combined with nutrition and culinary training, success is attainable. This training is led by each camper’s Behavioral Coach (Masters- or Doctoral- level psychologists or social workers). Behavioral Coaches (BC’s) lead the camper along the journey to success while working to overcome any barriers to mastering the behaviors necessary for successful long-term weight control.
Year-Round Continuing Care Program>> During the last week of camp, Behavioral Coaches (BC) introduce campers to Continuing Care. The easy-to-use tools allow campers to stay in communication with their BC from camp, as well as other campers. The year-round Continuing Care Program also provides a supportive environment for participants to continue using the new skills they have learned at camp. Continuing Care continues until June 1, 2011.
Bringing Families Together for Continued Success>> At the end of each camp session, Wellspring Adventure Camp hosts a Family Workshop. Wellspring researchers have demonstrated that families who are involved in their child’s progress and work to provide a supportive, healthy environment at home are more likely to see their child continue weight loss at home.
